Taking out the trash

We all know what it’s like, you buy a brand new computer, only to have it bogged down by useless bloatware. How would you like it if you could buy that new computer without the useless software attached? With Sony’s Fresh Start optimization program, you can. Sony recently announced its bloatware removal program for select laptops, stating that, for only $49.99, consumers could have Sony remove the software for them. Charging $49.99 is as ludicrous as the bloated software itself. This move was about as despicable as you can get. Not only is Sony filling its computers with unwanted software, but it was going to try making even more profit by charging consumers to remove something that shouldn’t be there in the first place.

Luckily, Sony realized the error of its ways and is now offering the program for free. However, why not just get rid of the bloatware entirely? If Sony will remove the software for free, how about not including the software in the first place? Who really wants a 60-day anti-virus trial that will only leave behind unwanted program files once the time period runs up? Consumers shouldn’t be removing software when they buy new computers, but adding software, software that they want on their machines. Sadly, this day may never come, seeing as how profitable bloatware is for companies.

Nevertheless, at least Sony’s making progress, even if it did make a serious mistake by initially deciding to charge for its optimization feature. Other companies should follow Sony’s lead and begin offering their computers free of bloatware. Consumers have put up with useless, space-eating, resource-draining applications long enough. It’s time to take out the trash.
