Google has announced that its popular online word processor, Google Docs, will now also be able to be used offline. This new feature makes use of Google Gears (an online extension that lets you run web applications offline) and is currently supported only by Firefox and Internet Explorer. With this new feature, Google Docs will automatically download your documents to your computer, so when you are working offline, you can continue to edit and save your documents. Once you reconnect to the Internet, Google Docs will automatically sync your documents with Google’s servers and you’ll be ready to go. This new functionality is only being offered to a limited number of users at this time, but should be available to all users in the near future. Google Docs has already established itself as a viable alternative to Microsoft Office for many and should the offline component of the program work well, Microsoft may see even more of its customers flock to Google’s free online program.
