Its interesting to see so many negative opinions for Vista, Even I had told a lot of guys not to use vista....
Till my shiny new laptop came with vista.
Sure Vista has its own quirks, a few of my apps "Stopped Responding" and at times I had system that just wont respond. But I still have very fond memories of XP showing me BSODs, and I still remember the time when my desktop vendor suggested me "against" XP coz it needs "lots of ram" and is "slower".
The point is, tomorrow when Windows 7 is finally lauched, ppl are going to say how XP and Vista is so much better than 7.

From what I have observed, Vista doesnt work well with anything older than Intel "Core" series and RAM <1GB (1GB is just about it, but with 2GB things can become a lot more comfortable).
Sluggishness ? Well, Vista prefetch can do wonders, FireFox and GIMP fires up fast, Very fast.
And thanks to I/O prioratization, Neither windows Indexing nor BitDefender hurts my normal work on my laptop.

All in all, vista for end user is more evolutionary. and I found there is a lot going on under the skin to keep things running real smooth. Personally I will recommend Vista to anyone purchasing a new comp.

I have a problem with this article.

To start, who ever wrote that is not well versed in MS's timeline of OS releases. Windows 7 will be released on track as with all other OSs. The only divergence of this schedule is Vista and only because they dropped Longhorn. So basically an OS was skipped versus Vista being late.

So that leaves us to ponder what else this guy isn't well versed with in regards to Vista as a whole. He tries to spoon feed us the idea that the release of Windows 7 among other things doesn't "bode well" for Vista? That's ridiculous. He says this but he doesn't base it on anything real. Windows 7 isn't being released any sooner then any other OS (again, with the exception of Vista). So that leaves me to wonder how old this guy is in order to evaluate his level of knowledge in such things since he only seems to have knowledge of XP and Vista in his memory bank to pull from to develop such bogus "bottoms lines".

For those that are wondering, we get a new desktop every 2-3 years:

I've been using Vista Ultimate since RC2 (beta), and have honestly loved it. It's much more intuitive, and I can find stuff on my computer MUCH quicker. The organizational functions are great. And if I had kids, I would be LOVING the built-in parental controls.

The UAC (User Account Control) has saved my ass a few times. On the other hand, the only time I got a virus was when a house guest was using the PC and just went clicking through the Ok's on the UAC warnings, because he wasn't familiar with Vista. And it crashed my system in a really bad way. That was my dad, and he got an earful about reading warnings and not just clicking "Ok" to anything and everything! :)

Now, the people that I have run into that are anti-Vista are in two categories:
- System Admins that have had legitimate problems and don't want to take the time to "fix what isn't broken" with XP (I can understand that)
- People that have heard from others that they shouldn't like Vista and so they bash it.

Yes, drivers were a big problem at launch, but that was not MS's fault as the third party manufacturers need to make drivers available, nor is it an indication of how well or poorly Vista runs.

If I get a flat tire on my brand-new car, would I complain to Honda, or GoodYear?

Give Vista a chance, and if you honestly still don't like it, then I'm with you to go back to XP or wait for the next system.

Best,
Jason

Why does it seem to be the latest fad to bash vista. I have Vista Home Premium preinstalled on my laptop. It's fast. It's responsive. I haven't had any software or hardware issues. Aero is extremely pretty and I have no complaints. If you're complaining that vista won't run on that 10 year old machine, buy yourself a new computer!

I won't bother bashing on Vista, or XP instead I'll take my shots on Microsoft itself. As several have said, don't try using the software (OS) on machines that are several years old, it more then likely wont be a pleasant experience. Microsoft has continuously made their software bigger and with more bloat then a dead cow on a hot summers day. Their are other operating system out there that instead of striving to out date your computer within months, work to streamline their programing code so that your computer can hum along for many more years to come. If you don't understand when was the last time you saw any Microsoft product advertised to run on a x86 machine? That typically means older ones with a slower cpu speed. (Under 1 GH). While i686 is what the newer pentium speeds are geared for. I guarantee you that vista is in the i686 class, despite what their web page says. I've seen it run on 1 gig of memory and even then it was slow. Like I said their are alternatives, and those that are willing to suffer will continue to be slaves to the constant barrage of Microsoft's assault on your wallet. Did I mention that the other system are completely free?

I hate Vista with a fiery passion. It seems like there was way too much time making it "look better" (not my opinion, I find it irritating and useless) and not nearly enough making it WORK. Sorry if I prefer function to form, or that I think it's common sense to make your next version of an OS compatible with the previous versions/software available.

For more ranting, I posted about it here: http://mickeypvx.wordpress.com/2008/02/23/windows-vista-pile-of-crap/

I have to use windows for work still, because of the outlook mail and appointment integration lock-in. I do use XP there, but for anything else I use Ubuntu Linux, both at work and at home.

That being said, XP was just as hated and unstable when it was first introduced, and it matured, and the hardware caught up with it. So I would assume that Vista just is still at the beginning of that lifecycle.

However the main unique issue I have with Vista over XP is the attempt to force a trusted computing model on the user, similar to what Apple does on their iPhone infrastructure. Supposedly there are like 7 programs that attempt to control what you are doing with your data on your computer, which is just the wrong approach.

I will only buy and use hardware and software that enhances my abilities, and not any that are designed to restrict my abilities. Policing should be left to the police, and not to a corporation.

That is something I strongly object to, and is also the reason why I have returned my iPhone.

Vista's performance is awful on anything but the most expensive laptop's today compared to windows XP. And the GUI while it looks fancy and nice it horribly designed. Microsoft says that it attempted to upgrade windows XP's user interface to be more user-friendly, but they just made it worse lol. And unlike the a previous comment suggested, most people who have a problem with vista have used it.
I have to say I agree with <a href="http://tektodo.com/2008/04/05/the-end-of-vista/#comment-96" rel="nofollow">whyamistilltyping's comment</a> - I actually had more problems with XP than Vista. No driver problems so far, no compatibility problems so far and only two BSODs in the past year. That beat's my track record with XP, which BSODded every time I played a WMA or WMV in WMP!

Mind you, almost as soon as I got my laptop (pre-loaded Vista), I stripped it and re-installed Vista from scratch so it wouldn't have crapware on it.

I have longer battery life in Vista than XP and, even on specs at which everyone else says everything (including Aero) should be crawling, it's remarkably responsive.

I only have two complaints with Vista: UAC in place for trivial things (font installation, shortcut changing and time syncing) and the fact that system files are so much more difficult to patch when one wants to install custom styles.

Oh, yes, and the fact that it was years overdue and lacking in terms of real killer features.

But, despite the fact that I'm quite fond of Vista after a year of using it, I'd happily trade for Ubuntu (or any Linux distro) if bloody Broadcom's wireless drivers are freed and work out-of-the-box. Grrr...

The funny thing is that I have friends with newer and far fancier (and more expensive) notebooks and specs sometimes double my own, and their computers just about die with Vista. Then you also have Microsoft execs having troubles with Vista. :D

I believe that it's possible that Vista only works for a small, absolutely 1337-x0r sub-section of the computing community that secretly pwn like no others. And I'm one of those people.

<b>Or</b> people having troubles with Vista just have hardware that's not properly supported. If this is the case, I think you'd be better off directing your anger at hardware manufacturers and OEMs.

But if you have super awesome and compatible hardware and it still sucks, throw your anger upon Microsoft, comrades!

I have to say I agree with whyamistilltyping’s comment – I actually had more problems with XP than Vista. No driver problems so far, no compatibility problems so far and only two BSODs in the past year. That beat’s my track record with XP, which BSODded every time I played a WMA or WMV in WMP!

Mind you, almost as soon as I got my laptop (pre-loaded Vista), I stripped it and re-installed Vista from scratch so it wouldn’t have crapware on it.

I have longer battery life in Vista than XP and, even on specs at which everyone else says everything (including Aero) should be crawling, it’s remarkably responsive.

I only have two complaints with Vista: UAC in place for trivial things (font installation, shortcut changing and time syncing) and the fact that system files are so much more difficult to patch when one wants to install custom styles.

Oh, yes, and the fact that it was years overdue and lacking in terms of real killer features.

But, despite the fact that I’m quite fond of Vista after a year of using it, I’d happily trade for Ubuntu (or any Linux distro) if bloody Broadcom’s wireless drivers are freed and work out-of-the-box. Grrr…

Good. I hope they learned there lessons and the next Windows will not have the problems Vista has.
My computer is old and I need a new one but I can't afford a $2000 or more computer, I can't affair a powerful processor, powerful graphics card, huge hard drive and so on that vista would need, at the most I could afford a $500 computer but such computers would be slow with Vista and they don't offer XP computers cause Microsoft is pushing Vista like its crack (what ever happened to "the customer is always right") so i would have to spend another $200 to get XP and I can't afford that so I'm stuck with my old computer.
And the worse part is most of the features you get on Vista you can get off the internet (many for free) for XP with out using as much system resources as vista would.

Now I don't expect a computer I can afford to be able to run the latest Windows as good as the previous Windows but Vista just uses far to much system resources. Most people are not going to buy a computer good enough to run it decently and I can't afford to.

I like Vista, it came with the laptop that I bought. I like that when I install a new application the start menu is already sorted.

But otherwise, Microsoft tried too hard to compete with Apple. I can't stand the [Windows]+[tab] key combination, it's useless. The Aero interface is a waste of horsepower, I can't believe they forced graphics card makers to support it.

Agreed that even on faster hardware, Vista runs slower. Also, it isn't compatible with many softwares out there, be it games or serious stuff. That's why I was so hesitant to get Vista, but since it comes pre-loaded on almost every notebook, there's not much of a choice. Hopefully if Microsoft really plans to ditch Vista, they'll devise a way to let Vista users revert to XP.

It's possible Vista will bite the dust. There have been so many complaints over the OS that Microsoft has probably had enough.
i do believe that yeah.. Vista is cool trying to compete with imac on the visual side but it is so annoying and there are many thing that restrict you from having a good OS

I just had a conversation last night with a family member who purchased an HP laptop with Vista pre-installed. He's disappointed because it's such a dog. It boots up slowly, and programs take an inordinate amount of time to open. He's looking into possibly installing XP on it, which for him, would be awesome on the newer hardware. He has no need for the GUI, he just wants a responsive machine.

Personally, I think "whyamistilltyping" up there actually hit the nail on the head.
I'm a windows user through-and-through, and while I still rely on XP for many things, I find Vista to be a much more robust and reliable system. Don't get me wrong, I love XP, but Vista is honestly just so much better. As per usual, the only complaint I have is the difference in system requirements, and that's just my own damn fault for not upgrading my PC for the past few years.

Another thing to think about: Vista is much more widely used than Linux (based on web polling from w3schools), and a considerable portion of those Vista users love it and would refuse to switch away. That means it's just as successful as Linux, if not more, and Linux certainly isn't coming to any sort of demise. Why should it be any different for Vista?

I ow three (3) copies of Vista Ultimate, one 64b and the other two 32b and I prefer it over XP. The biggest gripe I have is all the DRM crap. If MS removed it from the OS I think Vista would be the best OS version ever released by it. However in its current state I'm looking forward to the next version, the sooner the better and if it has as much or more DRM, I'll switch to another platform.

Vista Ultimate 64-bit is a big pain in the you-know-what.
Incompatible with many pieces of hardware and software -
even when installed on a high end machine.

Long live Macs!

Oh, yeah... one of my complaints is the same as Pamela's. You can't x out of the programs -- it tells you the program has stopped working and restarts it so it takes you twice to shut it down. I didn't have that problem if I closed it out through the drop down menu, but who uses that to close documents? After years of using windows, the brain automatically sends the hand and mouse to x out.

I hate Vista and I'm not talking because it takes a learning curve. I do not like the arrangement of anything - I much prefer XP, but I'm computer literate enough to figure out how to navigate it.

I bought my new computer in November (didn't want to because of everything I had heard about Vista but had no choice). Since November, I've had nothing but problems with Vista.

It is currently in the repair shop for the last three weeks and they still haven't figured out what's wrong with it and so now they want to take it back to factory reset. Of course, I can reload things... just have to waste my time doing it... oh and all those programs which only come with a couple of installs... say hello to having to buy new programs just because Vista is sh*t.

At the moment I'm typing on my laptop with my beloved XP... never knew I'd appreciate an operating system so much. But this laptop is old now for a computer and I shudder to think I might have to replace it.

For the first time EVER, I'm thinking of trashing my brand new computer and going MAC. I can use both, I've just always preferred PC and hence more familiar with it. But if anything is going to send me scurrying to MAC, it's VISTA
