Yesterday evening, Microsoft withdrew its bid for Yahoo, which had increased to $42.3 billion. According to an MSNBC.com article, Microsoft was willing to go up to $47.5 billion, but Yahoo demanded at least $53 billion. There was talk of a hostile takeover by Microsoft, but Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, felt that such a move would not be “sensible”. Ballmer went on to state that Microsoft has a “talented team” and although Yahoo would have helped “accelerate” Microsoft’s strategy, he felt “confident that we [Microsoft] can continue to move towards our goals.”
Microsoft has been in a protracted battle with Google, a company that has been eating away at Microsoft’s dominance with a whole suite of Web-based applications, and Yahoo would (supposedly) have been a valuable tool for the Redmond-based software maker to go up against the Internet search giant.
With the deal behind them, it will be interesting to see what direction both Microsoft and Yahooo now take.
